Light Control and Lightroom

Here's an interesting question that may get your brains working.

Apart from the fact I did use Lightroom to close the image of Shelley down, another reason exists for having such a dark background and it happened at the time of shooting, not during manipulation. The image was shot at midday in my lounge with the ambient light flooding into the room. It was bright!

So how is it possible to make the background go almost totally dark while exposure properly for the subject? Any answers, fire away!

Here's a hint. The flash has depth of field. If I place the flash close to the subject, the light passing the subject has a huge fall off and is almost non existant by the time it reaches the back wall. The distance from the flash to the subject is around one foot but the distance from the flash to the back wall is around ten feet. To make the wall go lighter I would move the flash away from the subject and increase its power, by moving the flash away from the subject, I'm also increasing its depth of field!
