Lightroom 1.1

Lightroom 1.1 adds improved noise reduction and sharpening and raw file support for a number of new digital cameras from manufacturers including Canon, Nikon, Olympus.

I've had a play with the new sharpening options, which include Amount, Radius, Detail and Masking.

Wow 1.1 is a huge upgrade from version 1.0.

Let's have a look at some of the changes.

Sharpening, let's look at it in detail. These changes apply to both Lightroom and Camera Raw 4.1

As explained earlier, we now have four sliders. Amount is well, just the amount of sharpening. Radius is how many pixels either side of the edge that will be sharpened. If you hold down the Option or Alt key while you have the Radius slider clicked, you will get a preview of what the Radius will look like. Detail deals with Halo suppression, move the slider to the right and the Halo suppression is reduced to none, move the slider to the left and the Halo suppression becomes effective.

By holding down the Option/Alt key you can see how the Detail slider works. Masking allows for an edge masking capability. This mean if you move the slider to the right only the edges will be sharpened, move the slider to the left and the sharpening is applied to the whole image. To check out the effect, hold down the Option/Alt key while moving the slider.

Remember this is only Capture Sharpening.

Sharpening is a three step process involving Capture Sharpening, Selective Sharpening and Output Sharpening. Selective and Output Sharpening can be applied in Photoshop.
